Middle East Parking Symposium A Success

The 3rd Annual Middle East Parking Symposium (MEPS) was October 10-12 in Abu Dhabi, as a joint effort between IPI and MEPS and was a resounding success.  IPI was able to extend its name and show off its capabilities in a part of the world that is growing tremendously and was also able to make contact with a multitude of vendors, consultants and markets that we had never before achieved. MEPS was able to expand its symposium topics into areas that had heretofore been untapped.  IPI Speakers gave outstanding presentations on diverse topics such as access control technology, automated garage systems, private public partnerships, parking as a tool to reduce greenhouse gasses, parking enforcement and more. At the same time, Michele Amaya, IPI's Exhibits and Events Coordinator, worked the IPI booth providing information about IPI, the Certified Administrator of Public Parking (CAPP) Program and webinar offerings through IPI's e-Learning Center.

For more information and photos of this great event, be sure to read the December issue of The Parking Professional.

Snow & Ice Management for Parking Facilities

IPI's October webinar, Snow & Ice Management for Parking Facilities and Structures, was presented on October 20 and walked participants through the most important elements in creating a long term strategy for managing snow and ice for parking lots, sidewalks, parking structures, and other high-traffic areas. It was broken into two parts and covered Preparation & Logistics and In-House vs. Outsourcing. You can access the archived webinar here and IPI members can access the Snow Response Plan and Risk Liability Property Assessment Checklist that was part of the webinar in the IPI Knowledge Center.

November IPI Webinar: Maintenance

e-learning logo Parking Facility Structural and Waterproofing Maintenance - Forestalling Major Restoration

Proper maintenance is a key factor in determining whether a parking garage will remain a valuable asset or sadly deteriorate into a liability for the owner. This webinar will:
·  Give an overview of structural and waterproofing problems typically found in today's precast and cast-in-place post-tensioned parking facilities.
·  Teach you how to identify and respond to critical problems.
·  Educate you on how to identify when problems have progressed to a level which perhaps dictates the need for a major restoration project.

Instructor: Christopher Przywara, P.E., Principal, THP Limited, Inc.

IPI and Department of Energy Lighting Usage Survey

The International Parking Institute (IPI) is proud to be partnering with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its Lighting Research and Development Program to study lighting consumption and opportunities for energy-savings in the parking industry.
If you have parking facilities, this is your opportunity to play a vital role in this joint IPI/DOE research study by completing a short survey that asks a variety of questions about lighting and parking. Please take a few minutes to complete this questionnaire because with your help this report will be more reflective of our industry.
The results of the survey will be useful for parking professionals and the parking industry overall. It will:
· Determine performance characteristic of lighting technologies
· Identify trends, drivers, and barriers to improve efficiencies in the lighting market
· Recognize opportunities for energy savings in the future

Thank you in advance for participating in this important parking and transportation research project. We will share the results by publishing the data on the International Parking Institute's Web site and distributing it through the IPInsider.

Please complete the survey no later than
 Wednesday, October 28, 2010.
If you have any questions or concerns about completing the questionnaire or about participating in this study, please contact the IPI offices at 540.371.7535.

IPI and First Observer Program Featured in Today's Facility Manager Magazine

This month, Today's Facility Manager Magazine which reaches 50,000 FMs, there is nearly a full page devoted to 'Protection Parking Areas." The bylined article by IPI Deputy Director Henry Wallmeyer helps favorably position the profession to a key target audience. The article, part of IPI's Parking Matters industry-wide program for advancing the parking professional, focuses on the First Observer program. At the conclusion of the article, editor Anne Vazquez includes an overview of IPI and solicits input from readers on other security measures and training for parking employees - a good way to get FMs thinking about the importance of parking.
