From the October The Parking Professional
Operating Snow & Ice-Friendly
Facilities
Richard L. Hanneman, The Salt Institute
Providing convenient, safe vehicle parking is a year-round
benefit, an under-appreciated essential for businesses and
industries in at least two-thirds of the United States and all of
Canada.
Yet most discussions of providing safe passage for cars and trucks in winter storm conditions dwell exclusively on public roadways. Studies have documented the intuitive insight that clearing away ice and snow preserves safe and passable roads. For example, a study by Marquette University found traffic crashes were cut 85 percent in the hours immediately following plowing and salting - and injury crashes were slashed even more, 88.3 percent. In terms of safety benefits alone, spreading salt on roads pays for itself within a half hour and delivers safety benefits of $6.50 for every dollar in snowfighting costs. Winter Parking Facility Operations As in most things, there is a "right-way" and a "wrong-way" to
combat snow and ice, but it is not as simple as you might
think. There are thousands of types of snow and snow
storms. Parking facilities have different contours and
surfaces. Usage patterns vary.
