IPI and Department of Energy Lighting Usage Survey

The International Parking Institute (IPI) is proud to be partnering with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its Lighting Research and Development Program to study lighting consumption and opportunities for energy-savings in the parking industry.

If you have parking facilities, this is your opportunity to play a vital role in this joint IPI/DOE research study by completing a short survey that asks a variety of questions about lighting and parking. Please take a few minutes to complete this questionnaire because with your help this report will be more reflective of our industry.

The results of the survey will be useful for parking professionals and the parking industry overall. It will:
· Determine performance characteristic of lighting technologies
· Identify trends, drivers, and barriers to improve efficiencies in the lighting market
· Recognize opportunities for energy savings in the future

Thank you in advance for participating in this important parking and transportation research project. We will share the results by publishing the data on the International Parking Institute's Web site and distributing it through the IPInsider. Please complete the survey no later than Wednesday, October 28, 2010.

If you have any questions or concerns about completing the questionnaire or about participating in this study, please contact the IPI offices at 540.371.7535.

From the October The Parking Professional

Operating Snow & Ice-Friendly Facilities
Richard L. Hanneman, The Salt Institute

Providing convenient, safe vehicle parking is a year-round benefit, an under-appreciated essential for businesses and industries in at least two-thirds of the United States and all of Canada.

Yet most discussions of providing safe passage for cars and trucks in winter storm conditions dwell exclusively on public roadways. Studies have documented the intuitive insight that clearing away ice and snow preserves safe and passable roads.  For example, a study by Marquette University found traffic crashes were cut 85 percent in the hours immediately following plowing and salting - and injury crashes were slashed even more, 88.3 percent.  In terms of safety benefits alone, spreading salt on roads pays for itself within a half hour and delivers safety benefits of $6.50 for every dollar in snowfighting costs.

Winter Parking Facility Operations
As in most things, there is a "right-way" and a "wrong-way" to combat snow and ice, but it is not as simple as you might think.  There are thousands of types of snow and snow storms.  Parking facilities have different contours and surfaces.  Usage patterns vary.
