The International Parking Institute Announces Winners of 2010 Awards of Excellence Competition

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - May 19, 2010 - The International Parking Institute (IPI) has announced the winners of their 2010 International Parking Institute's Awards of Excellence Competition. Each year, the competition recognizes world-class examples of parking design and program innovation. Winners of the 28th Annual International Parking Institute Awards of Excellence were announced during the 2010 IPI Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, NV last week.
This year's winners reflect a parking industry trend toward sustainability with many of the projects incorporating LEED certification, energy efficient lighting, use of solar panels, advanced technologies and innovative approaches that reduce the need for more parking spaces.
"These projects showcase the benefits of making parking professionals part of the planning, design and management team early in the process," said Shawn Conrad, CAE, Executive Director of the International Parking Institute. "When you plan for parking, you get more efficient - not necessarily more parking - and that translates into reduced costs, better facility design, better transportation flow, better user satisfaction."
Award categories recognize outstanding achievement in Design, Program/Operations, Rehabilitation and Aesthetics. Specific criteria include exterior appearance, continuity with surrounding environment, economy of construction, security, lighting, ease of use, graphic and art elements, landscaping, architectural treatment, efficiency, compliance with the American Disabilities Act, operations efficiency and revenue generation.

A key part of the transformation of Towson Town Center from a simple indoor shopping mall to a premier shopping destination was the expansion of an existing parking facility to accommodate the mall's growth. In addition to featuring an inviting walkway with ornate ceilings and vibrant lighting which connects the garage to the mall, the expansion includes a significant amount of mixed-used space for additional retail and dining, giving Towson Town Center a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly "main street" feel.

The positive experience for visitors of Car Park One begins on entry, where displays reading "Welcome Back" or "Have a Great Day" greet them. Bright white walls and long sight lines provide a sense of security, while bold graphics and primary colors provide an easy way to for visitors to navigate. An interior atrium flooded with natural light sustains the positive mood. Car Park One does all this while appearing unrecognizable as a garage from the outside thanks to a "transparent" mesh wall which conceals vehicles from view and turns alternately gold, purple, yellow and blue in the sunlight.

The Southwest Parking Garage Complex at the University of Florida in Gainesville achieves the university's goal of creating a contemporary building consistent with the campus' historic red brick character while also meeting the U.S. Green Building Council's highest LEED certification standards. The triangular structure tripled the capacity of the surface lot it replaced and remained pedestrian-friendly by hiding the garage behind integrated office space. The complex includes several creative design, construction and sustainability solutions, including spaces for plug-in vehicles, landscaping to protect surrounding wetlands, and significant use of natural light.

The new parking garage at Sony Electronics' San Diego headquarters was designed both with Sony's employees and the environment in mind. Built to match the new office building it neighbors, the garage is connected to the building by more than just their matching stone and glass facades. A glass-railed bridge provides employees with direct access not only to the parking structure, but to the fitness center, activity deck and basketball court atop it. In addition, the garage was built to LEED Silver certification specifications by incorporating solar panels, preferred parking for carpools and energy efficient vehicles, covered bicycle parking, natural storm water filtration and native, drought tolerant landscaping.

Designed in 1999, the ramp's construction was put on hold after the September 11 attacks and subsequent drop in air travel. The four-year delay was used to adjust its design to accommodate the new Hiawatha Light Rail line linking the airport to downtown Minneapolis and the Mall of America. During construction, updated growth projections led to design changes allowing for the future addition of two more parking levels. Now in operation, the ramp is a significant source of parking revenue for the airport, the nation's 16th busiest.

The structure, built to address a critical parking shortage, did much more than add parking spaces. Atop the structure is a new, state-of-the-art, LEED-certified 47-bedroom Ronald McDonald House, four times the size of the hospital's previous House. In design, the structure aesthetically complements both the existing parking structure and hospital while paying particular attention to passive security systems and crime prevention.

This new ramp meets LEED standards for sustainable design while
also blending seamlessly into its surroundings. Several design
elements break up the building's exterior, making it less imposing.
Rather than being hidden inside, the ramp's elevator tower and
outdoor stairwell provide design interest as well as make it easier
for visitors to find their way through the building. Solar panels
incorporated in the structure's roof have reduced campus energy
costs by twenty-five percent.

The University of Colorado, Boulder, is frequently recognized as one of the nation's greenest, in large part due to its Parking and Transportation Services. Despite a growing number of commuters, the campus continues to reduce its carbon impact through better use of scarce parking resources. Its Ecopass program provides free public transportation for employees, freeing over 1,000 parking spaces. The addition of more than 1,300 bike parking spaces in the past two years means that bike parking and vehicle parking spaces have reached parity. Two existing garages were renovated to reduce energy consumption; a third garage under construction will include electric vehicle charging stations.

The UC-San Diego campus' parking facilities cater to several different groups each with different needs. Campus hospital visitors value convenience over cost; faculty members need inexpensive, convenient daily access; and students and staff are more likely to take advantage of the several transit alternatives offered by the school. By identifying and analyzing these diverse needs, the campus developed a simple, sustainable and successful parking management strategy. The number of single-occupant cars driving to campus has dropped 17 percent in eight years, with the campus aiming for another ten percent reduction by 2018.

The city of Calgary's ParkPlus management system combines new street parking zones with innovative digital photo enforcement capabilities. After registering their license plate online, customers with cell phone parking accounts can now simply call a number and indicate their zone; another quick call will credit their account for any unused time upon their return. Alternatively, license plate and zone information can be entered at the solar-powered pay kiosks that have replaced downtown parking meters.
