FREDERICKSBURG, VA - May 19, 2010 - Parking  professionals on the front line of interacting with the public and supervising parking operations at garages, on-street and surface parking facilities are often undervalued, but their contribution helps keep our streets safe and transportation flowing.

At the International Parking Institute 2010 Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, Nev. last week, a number of unsung heroes received recognition.

Adriana Chapa was named Parking Supervisor of the Year for her outstanding work at the City of Houston's Parking Management Division. Chapa exhibits a great knowledge of state and city codes and has made her mark serving on different teams transitioning to new management software.

An honorable mention for Parking Supervisor of the Year was awarded to Humberto Escandon, Miami Parking Authority, Miami, Fla. for his contribution working with tourists and motivating staff.

Two parking professionals were recipients of the Parking Staff Member of the Year award. Leanne Fouche of the University of Georgia was described as a role model for customer service, earning accolades from colleagues, students, faculty and staff. Fouche previously has won a Gold Medal for Customer Service Excellence from the University System of Georgia.

Also sharing the top award from IPI in this category was John Honea of the City of Little Rock, Ark.  Honea's customers know him as the Little Rock Ambassador and he works with his city and their Chamber of Commerce in making visitors feel welcome.

Honorable mentions for Parking Staff Members were also awarded to:

  • Nicole Harris, Winnipeg Parking Authority, Manitoba, Canada for her depth of knowledge with new technologies in parking
  • Luis Ruiz, Miami Parking Authority, Miami, Fla. as a parking enforcement officer who exemplifies team work

"These winners exemplify the parking professional and the contribution they make not only to their organizations, but also to the cities and the patrons they serve," said Shawn Conrad, CAE, Executive Director of the International Parking Institute.

IPI's Professional Recognition Program acknowledges that parking professionals are the profession's most valuable assets. These individuals capably maintain and operate parking operations of every size and are enhancing the perception of parking as a career and a profession.
